His ‘n’ Hers

Relationship strife – we have all had it – whether you are wildly happily married, single and wondering whether you will ever settle down, or bitterly resigned to just battling on, we have all been there.

Apparently you are statistically most likely to be murdered in your own bedroom… Scary, I can remember watching relationaship expert and psychiatrist, RD Laing being interviewed and him saying that you are safer wandering the streets of Los Angeles than sitting in your bedroom… Oh dear – I do hope the arguments are not about interior design.

There can surely be no longer running battleground than the marital bedroom – who decides on the duvet? The cover? The bed itself, the wardrobe solutions… and then you have to reassess these decisions every time you move, jointly…

In our house we have always really gone with what Doug wants – unusual, I suspect, I always imagine a lot of men don’t care and that Doug is unusually interested in cushions and duvet covers… Luckily, I do quite like his taste and I do trust him, sort of. In most homes, is it not the wife making these choices though? Or are we all metrosexual now and making these choices together?

North Berwick

Affectionately known as ‘The Hamptons of Scotland’, the East Lothian coastline is where everyone really wants to live. Laid back, friendly, with stunning beaches and great schools… It’s where we live, of course and big news in our neck of the woods – a new show home has opened at Walker Group’s Glen Ora development in North Berwick. I have been very curious…

Family room

I knew that Walker Homes were planning to add a retro, off-beat note to this development. Featuring this season’s hottest trend in warm metals and Pantone’s new colours for 2016: rose quartz and serenity in abundance. I nipped down as soon as I could and I was not disappointed.

Trade fairs

On my bucket list is most definitely ‘Maison et Objet’ in Paris, the twice yearly, massive, interior design, trade exhibition in Paris. Please let me know if you would like to chummy me one day? I always do go to the very enjoyable equivalent in Scotland at the Dunblane Hydro, a lovely day out of fabric, furniture, lunch and chat…

Dunblane

A happy compromise might be to visit one of the many Interior Design shows at the NEC in Birmingham sometime. The January Furniture Show is on 24th-27th January 2016. Everyone is talking about Birmingham at the moment, the new High Speed Rail link and the recently renovated Grand Central Station has brought a lot of hype, amongst shopaholics and food lovers alike, as it contains a lot of great shops and nice eateries.

Ikea – Live Lagom

Delighted to be involved in a project with Ikea. The word ‘Lagom’ means ‘just right’ in Swedish and Ikea are launching a project called ‘Live Lagom’ to encourage us all to live more sustainably, avoid waste and save money. As a Lagom ambassador, I am being given £500 of sustainable products and will tell you how they change the way I live across the course of 4 months by writing blog posts and recording short videos. Ikea want to show the world why Living Lagom is the way forward for all of us.

At the end of December, Doug and I enjoyed a shopping trip, with Katie Thomson, from customer services, to select some products that will help us reduce our outgoings and use less energy. Predictably, we loved every minute!

The Bridge

Happy New Year everyone.

Wasn’t the end of last year just a great season of action packed, thrilling dramas? The Bridge, season 3, Homeland season 5… Saga, Carrie, Quinn… love em all!! They are like family really, I feel I know them so well, with their funny little ways – or rather, mad compulsions – they love going into very dark, very dangerous situations on their own don’t they? They don’t like waiting for back up, or a sensible friend – oh no…

Hillary’s the blind company invited me to take part in a competition to design a Scandinavian inspired roller blind, using a repeat pattern. Well obviously, nothing was going to hold me back, except, I have to say, designing a roller blind, that is based on a repeat pattern, is a lot easier said than done. Crumbs it made me realise how incredibly clever these textile designers are. I thought I could just do a few scribbles and add a few nice colours… errr nooooo…
