Well, the Edinburgh Festival is truly upon us and we have gone ‘cultural’. I was invited to the opening of the exhibition at the Scottish Storytelling Centre of Dale Vn Marshall, managed by a friend of mine Vanessa Brodrick, of VB Fine Art
The exhibition was the culmination of a project during which Dale had worked with young people from Edinburgh experiencing mental health issues, helping them to express their feelings and experiences in a visual language. The outcomes are impressive. A couple of the youngsters were present at the opening and spoke about the time they had spent with Dale. It was obvious that the project had been a huge turning point for them and that Dale had enabled them to see their challenges as opportunities that could strengthen them rather than being purely destructive.
Well qualified to talk on this subject, Dale is himself a survivor of mental illness. His openness about his experiences and sincerity regarding his hope for the future was so engaging and touched everyone present.
Vanessa’s presentation of the project was wonderfully creative and enjoyable, the story telling centre is a busy fringe venue for the festival and the exhibition is a ‘must-stop off’ for anyone venturing around…
