To celebrate my new monthly column on the beautiful blog Decor8 where I have been asked to showcase contemporary Scottish Interiors, I thought I would post a particularly spectacular Highland home belonging to fashion designer, Jeanetta Rowan Hamilton.
Tucked away, north of Helmsdale, far off the beaten track, this jewel like fishing lodge is the perfect destination for anyone wishing to enjoy scenery, fresh air and even a spot of fishing.
The sense of ‘switch off’ you get when you arrive is overwhelming, completely addictive in fact and keeps the owner, Jeanetta and her whippet, Ruby, endlessly coming back for more. There is no internet, no TV, just peace and quiet and a fire to light when you get back from a walk.
With maybe a wee scone?
The cottage is perfectly designed to make you feel immediately at home. There is nothing in it bought new, everything is salvaged, bought from junk and antique shops or has been gifted by friends and family.
When Jeanetta inherited it, she had little money to spend and with the help of her daughter, ably did everything herself, hence the very simple decor solutions.
Although don’t be fooled by the simplicity as it is her talent for making and updating things so beautifully that earns her living: her company Nettles Cashmere, sells updated vintage garments, and is enjoyed by celebrity customers such as Mary Berry.
A needle and thread is always handy… Dividing her time between here and her central London home, her work is widely admired and her business goes from strength to strength
The kitchen has everything you need to make a simple meal and the dining room, with the cheerfully mis-matched chairs is a sociable space.
Jeanetta points out that she has filled her home with things she likes. ‘Nothing matches, but when you like things, they tend to go together!’
Always repairing her beloved Highland home, but there is nothing Jeanetta would change. ‘It is heaven as it is’ she says.
And with such a naturally beautiful location, charming history and eclectic interior, it is hard to disagree. Our day in her company is such a happy memory.
Jeanetta’s designs can be seen at the SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS, House & Garden Fair, 30th October – 5th November 2017 at Olympia, London
