Had a really fun day in Dundee recently. It is in the slightly raw process of transforming itself: it’s waterfront city centre is slowly becoming the country’s ‘go-to’ destination for art and design. The build is well under way for the planned new V&A, it is going to be simply stunning…
Described as the ‘new living room’ for the city. It will be more than complemented by the myriad of local designers I met at the Interiors Showcase I was attending, Scotland Redesigned.
This stunning ‘Geology’ cushion, by prize winning exhibitor, Kelly Mackay, would just look amazing on this gorgeous purple, velvet sofa –
Restored by local upholsterer M & M Ultimate Upholstery. Owner, Marek, is a firm believer in NOT ‘chucking out the chintz’, knowing that sofas were made to be preserved and that old furniture is typically, better quality than new and worth looking after. Get in touch with any furniture that you wish to salvage, he does a beautiful job and can supply fabric or you can use your own. His skills are highly valued by interiors professionals, with exacting standards, far and wide.
This more restrained, but equally beautiful, plaid sofa, also by Marek would equally be a gorgeous backdrop for a cushion by Kelly I reckon.
Bold design is everywhere in Dundee, it’s rich history of ‘Jute, Jam and Journalism’ means that locals appreciate colour and texture more than most. Community engagement with the arts is high and being a centre of excellence for science, as well, it is a city going places. The leafy west end is lovely, the city offers a good quality of life, well connected with it’s own airport, bursting with art centres and museums, a prestigious university and a highly regarded art school. Definitely worth a visit.
