Mid Century Magic

Individualising your home can be a long journey. Renovating a run down property is all about layering – frustratingly, getting the under layers right first: you can add personality once the damp and the wood chip have been dealt with. Adding character to a new build takes time as well: hunting down furniture and art work that says what you want, takes time.

However, I do know a fantastic short cut – it is in Edinburgh’s Dundas street. Xanthe Weir, owner of the wonderful mid century furniture shop Lair has done your homework. You really cannot fail to bring home something unique from her intriguing and inviting, basement store. A drinks trolley, purchased from Xanthe can be seen above, in it’s new home. The Willy Rizzo drinks trolley, below is a similarly stunning choice: it is in stock, in her Edinburgh store, now.

Items are available online as well, if you cannot visit in person. Whether it is something small for the mantel piece, a choice piece of sculpture, or a substantial item of furniture, you know that it will be of exceptional quality and unlikely to be something seen before, such as this French Admiral’s helmet –

A wonderful addition to any mantelpiece!

Xanthe is sourcing from all over the world and restoring pieces with the help of skilled artisans. This Danish rosewood desk is by J Svenstrup for A.P. Mobler.

Here is some of the furniture available arranged in Xanthe’s own home.

As you can see, the furniture is as ‘at home’ in a period setting as in a modern one.
