Happy New Year

It has been a great festive season – a little bit chopped up by a shoot the day after Boxing Day and another, again in Perthshire, tomorrow… We never quite switched off – somehow the jollities mixed with work and a New Years Eve party that we hosted kept us feeling quite ‘on it’ if I am honest. The New Year prompted a strong desire in me to have a total ‘Marie Kondo’ style clear out, which is always lurking beneath the surface anyway. A little bit of spare time and the realisation that a shelving unit that divides our living area from our dining area ‘has to go’ has motivated me to get started.

In our old house, said shelving unit stored our music collection, our books and our children’s toys in baskets. I love it, of course, because Doug made it and it served us so well.

When we moved here, it found a new purpose as a room divider and I now have mixed feelings about it. We have tried to beautify it, by storing less on it and using it to display pots and things… I am afraid it has suffered rather with this mixed purpose and I fear we never quite mastered the ‘beautiful collection of pots’ thing. Our mish mash of treasured wedding presents and odd, earthenware pots from B&Q, above bulging boxes of photographs, cards and gift wrap never quite came off I feel.

Bedroom desire

I think you know what my bedroom looks like…

Industrial chic bedroom

Yes… that’s right, it’s Doug’s bedroom!

In my dreams I have a Princess bedroom, with a bed like this –

Alice Bed

the Alice… night night… bye bye Douglas… A ‘Boutique Hotel’ style bedroom where people bring me croissants and orange juice and coffee in the morning and I don’t get crumbs everywhere… it’s so great! A generous fur throw would be a good addition to this bed, look out for them at bargain prices in TK Maxx.

The Nicole bed

This is the Nicole bed, also very nice. It has quite a masculine look, which can work well if you share your bedroom with a man. Natural wood and chrome accessories are obvious accompaniments.

I can’t quite believe that these beautiful beds are so reasonably priced from Carpetright!

The Isabelle is pretty too…

The Isabelle bed

Metal beds always look gorgeous on bare wooden floors, a couple of sheepskins on the floor either side would cosy the interior up nicely.

The headboards look like the kind of thing I had thought were only available from interior designers…

Ava headboard

The Ava linen headboard, in charcoal for instance…

Or this –

Cordeia head board

…the Cordelia headboard is amazing…

Grandeur headboard

I also like the Grandeur… simple, but smart.

It could not be easier or more affordable to update your bedroom, really effectively, with one of these headboards: the Grandeur is only £149 in Super King Size. It would give the room a stunning but subtle focus point. Mix up colours and textures: a linen headboard would work well with a fluffy mohair throw; purple or grey velvet cushions teamed with thick, organic, white cotton from Laura Thomas Linens, which I know is fairly traded and a silky eiderdown. The key is layering.
